Unconsciously, I have been living as an expat in Thailand for a full nine years now. In these three thousand-plus days, I’ve transformed from an expat rookie into a true local resident. After careful observation, I’ve found that the Thai philosophy of life and ours have many interesting differences.
In Bangkok, the pace of life might be similar to our urban areas; however, once you step slightly outside the outskirts of Bangkok, you will see a completely different Thai everyday life. Today, I’m sharing the "Thai lifestyle details" I’ve deeply observed recently to experience the authentic daily routine of Thai people.
Table of Contents
Popular Thai Cuisine: BBQ Hotpot (Moo Kata)
The climate in Thailand is hot, so it’s surprising that BBQ hotpot is so popular.
This "grill and pot" style restaurant features a dome in the center for grilling meat, surrounded by a moat for hotpot broth to cook vegetables and hotpot ingredients.
At an affordable price of about 100-200 Baht per meal, it is a major post-work treat for Thai office workers.
Daily Late-Night Snacks: Happiness for a Few Coins
Thai people have a special spot for late-night snacks. Although average salary levels aren't high, they love and are very willing to spend money on late-night bites.
Grabbing a bowl of chicken leg and pig blood noodles on the street for just 30 Baht is both satisfying and economical.
This is also why many people find their weight skyrocketing after being stationed in Thailand!
Thai People’s Favorite Whiskey & The Authentic Thai Way to Drink It
Besides beer, Thai people love this specific brand of whiskey the most.
The most authentic way to drink it isn't neat; most people mix it withsoda water, which costs only 8 Baht. It tastes refreshing and cuts through grease—perfect for a tropical climate.

Thai Daily — 2. Shopping and Massages: The Thai Aesthetic of Relaxation

Thai people are not stingy when shopping. You can always see crowds in department stores, returning home fully loaded—they really love to shop!
Thai products are affordable yet highly designed, which is why the business forThai personal shoppers serviceis booming.
Thai Cultural — 1. Gender Inclusivity in Thailand: Social Acceptance of Transgender Individuals
Transgender individuals are very active in Thai society. Whether in professional fields or large social gatherings, their presence is very common.
Many transgender individuals are not only highly capable and talented but also proficient in English and professional expertise.

Thai Cultural — 2. Traditional Thai Dance
Traditional Thai dance is still very popular today. Dressed in gorgeous traditional Thai attire and maintaining the extreme "lotus finger" posture, one can see the delicate aesthetic of Thai culture.
Thai Cultural — 3. Important Thai Buddhist Holidays & Temple Hopping
Working in Thailand, you will notice many "Buddhist Holidays" on the calendar; Buddhism is deeply integrated into daily life.
Monks will go directly to company entrances to collect alms on Buddhist holidays. Many devout Thai employees prepare offerings before work and give them directly to the monks visiting the company—very efficient for the monks.
Visiting temples on weekends and holidays, a full day of prayer and blessings
Visiting temples to offer sacrifices is a core part of Thai life. Most Thais are devout Buddhists, and they are very willing to spend an entire day visiting multiple temples to pray for blessings.
This photo of temple hopping from my Thai colleague is a typical itinerary: everyone surrounding the master, listening intently.
My urgent matter vs. his spiritual peace XD
Sometimes when I check work logs on the weekend and ask a colleague: "Why hasn't your data been uploaded yet?"
I often receive the reply: "We are at the temple praying all day, I'll give it to you later."
After being in Thailand for a long time, you get used to these unique excuses.
Temple hopping is not just about faith; it's a Thai daily routine. You can pray for anything—exams, promotions, relationships, or health.
For an expat, our weekend might be spent at a cafe or a trendy exhibition; for Thai colleagues, lighting incense, praying, and chatting at a temple is the weekend routine that truly recharges their souls.
Sometimes when I'm rushing for a file and get the response "at the temple" (meaning you can't push them 😆), I can't even get angry.
This sincerity and composure are exactly what makes Thai people so lovable: they integrate faith into their daily lives and live life to the fullest.
Thai Social Science: Favorite Conversation Topics
1. Warm Greetings About Daily Life
Thai people's main conversation topics mostly revolve arounddaily trifles; a typical greeting when meeting is: Have you eaten yet? (Kin Khao Reu Yang?) What did you have for breakfast, lunch, or dinner? / What are your son or daughter up to lately? / Where did you go on your day off yesterday? / Are you busy with work?
These topics become things they never tire of discussing. Although the content is ordinary and nothing special, it feels very human and warm when chatting.
2. A Passion for Gossip
Thai people are naturally curious and very fond ofgossip; they love inquiring about others' salaries and enjoy discussing others' social or dating lives.
Since Thai social atmosphere is relatively open, who has divorced how many times or who has how many wives often becomes a source of daily amusement over tea or after meals!
Above are the Thai daily observations I've compiled recently. If you have other interesting observations about life in Thailand, feel free to let me know!
Come to Thailand for an Authentic Thai Cooking Class Experience
If you love that balance of sour, spicy, and sweet in Thai cuisine, along with that unique fish sauce aroma, then scheduling a "cooking class" during your trip is definitely a more worthwhile investment than buying souvenirs.
By learning it yourself, you won't have to worry about not being able to eat it once you go home; by mastering this craft personally, you can recreate this authentic sensation on your own dining table anytime back home!
Experiencing a cooking class in Thailand is a popular itinerary requested by many of my friends when they visit—it's fun, delicious, and a great way to make friends.

(I’ve taken friends to Thai cooking classes before—cozy environment, English-speaking instructors, and a lively atmosphere filled with laughter throughout the session.)
Beyond the fun, from identifying galangal and lemongrass to blending curry paste, you can also learn the essence of the Thai kitchen.
There are plenty of choices for Thai cooking classes; you can simply checkthe best-sellers and high ratings on KKDay. The way to choose is: pick the class that features more dishes you personally want to eat. Basically, the instructors are very enthusiastic, and their culinary skills/explanations are very clear—you can tell just by looking at the positive reviews!

☎ Reservation Services for Thai Restaurants, Hotels, and Golf
Most reservations for Thai restaurants, itineraries, and vacation apartments in Thailand require a local Thai bank account for booking. (Popular cafes in Thailand like the Maldives-themed Bubble in the Forest Cafe and many unique accommodations outside major cities, such as those in the Pilok area of Kanchanaburi, often do not have online booking and payment mechanisms.)
